CHAPTER THIRTEEN
ELIZABETH WAS STARTLED when she came upon Colonel Fitzwilliam coming out of her sister Janeâs room.
He was carefully closing the door, and he did not see her there until he looked up and saw her standing in the hallway.
âYou know I come to visit her around this time every day,â she said, though she had established no real rhyme or reason to visiting Jane, truly. âYou are here to come at me this way, having heard that Mr. Darcy is coming at me through Willie.â
âOh, dear,â said the colonel, letting out a delighted laugh. âI do suppose that is a way he came at you and through you, if one thinks about it.â
She stiffened. âHe told you.â
âWell, if I was going to engage in some sort of pretend rivalry for your affections as a cover for his ability to get to know his son, then it was a good thing for me to know what I was actually doing,â said the colonel. âSo, yes, he told me. But I shanât tell anyone else.â
âSo, you are not⦠this is not some attemptâ¦â Elizabeth sighed heavily. âWhy are you here?â
âI thought your sister might be lonely,â said the colonel. âThat is all. I spoke to her for a time and we agreed I might come and see her regularly. I offered to read to her, but after hearing me read, we also agreed that was perhaps not my strong suit.â He laughed softly. âNow, she is asleep, Iâm afraid, if you hoped to speak to her.â He tilted his head to one side. âShe doesnât know.â
âOh, of course she doesnât know! You think I went around announcing to people that I was some sort of loose, scarlet woman? That I had no control of myself? That I allowed myself to be ruinedâthat I welcomed it, even brought it on myself?â She rubbed her forehead.
âAh, youâre quite hard on yourself, then. I suppose this is why you and Fitzwilliam get on so well.â The colonelâs eyes danced.
âMy hardness upon myself is nothing compared to what societyâs would be if they knew the truth.â
He nodded. âThat is unfortunately accurate, I suppose, madam.â
She pushed past him and opened the door a crack. Jane was, indeed, sleeping. She pulled the door shut. Sheâd come back later, she supposed.
âWalk with me?â said the colonel.
She sighed. âI donât have a choice, do I?â
âYou do. I have no intention of thrusting my company upon you against your will.â
âLetâs walk.â She gestured.
âIâm sorry if you donât wish me to know,â said the colonel as they fell into step together, making their way down the hallways. âI donât judge you for it or think badly of you. You seem a remarkably resourceful woman, in fact. I admire you.â
âNo, I did not plan any of this.â She gestured at the house.
âYou did not engineer your marriage to another man to save your reputation?â
âI didnât know I was with child when I acquiesced!â
âAh, of course,â said the colonel.
âIâm not some sort of calculating mercenary, truly.
